Richfield Community Gathers for the 3rd Annual Powwow

The Richfield High School gym filled with color, movement and the steady heartbeat of the drum on November 14, as students, families and community members came together for the third annual Richfield Powwow. The evening offered a meaningful celebration of Native American culture, bringing people of all ages together in a shared space of learning, connection and joy.

Led by Indigenous Education Coordinator Sam Weaver, the event was created in partnership with student leaders and the Indigenous Parent and Guardian Advisory Committee. Together, they welcomed hundreds of guests to experience traditional drumming and dancing, browse Native craft vendors, enjoy local food trucks and take part in activities that encouraged participation from newcomers and seasoned Powwow-goers alike.

The Grand Entry set the tone as dancers in vibrant regalia moved into the circle, guided by lead dancers and accompanied by powerful drum groups. Families stood in respect as the procession began, marking an important moment of unity and honoring the traditions carried forward by Indigenous communities. Throughout the night, guests enjoyed exhibition dances, spotlight dances that recognized students and community members, as well as special tributes to veterans and elders.

For many Indigenous students, the Powwow remained the heart of the evening. It offered a place to celebrate identity, feel recognized and deepen connections with their families and peers. For the broader school community, it served as an invitation to learn, participate and appreciate the richness of Indigenous cultures.

“Our students lead with so much pride during this event,” said Weaver. “When families, peers, staff and community members come together to honor that, it creates a powerful sense of belonging.”

As one of the district’s signature cultural celebrations, the Powwow continues to grow each year, strengthening relationships between families, students, educators and community partners. It reflects our commitment to creating spaces where every student feels seen and valued while encouraging cross-cultural learning.

We are grateful to the dancers, drummers, vendors, families, volunteers and staff who brought this celebration to life. A special thanks to the IPAC Chair, Milissa Carter, who was integral in the success of the event. The Powwow remains a powerful reminder of the importance of honoring tradition, uplifting student voices and building community through shared experiences.
