Senior Story: Cason Carter

Cason Carter is preparing for the next step in both his academic and athletic journey, with plans to attend Augsburg University, where he will play baseball while studying business.

At Richfield High School, Cason stood out not only for his involvement but for the way he connects with others. He is consistently described as a leader who is respected by peers, students and staff alike, and someone who leads with kindness, empathy and integrity. In classroom settings, he has shown curiosity and honesty, often engaging thoughtfully in discussions and learning from others' perspectives. 

One of Cason’s teachers, Kathryn Wegner, noted his ability to build strong relationships across different groups of people. In CIS Education, she observed him building relationships with peers from all walks of life, and contributing to discussions with intellectual curiosity and vulnerability. “Cason has an authentic interest in learning something from everyone and every situation he encounters. As a Teaching Assistant at Sheridan Hills, Cason also showed his knack for mentoring youth,” she shared. “Cason is a special person who sees the best in everyone he encounters, and I know he will bring his generous spirit and big heart into whatever creative endeavor he pursues in his future.”

That impact is reflected in Cason’s own reflections on his experiences working with elementary students. In his scholarship application essay, he shared that he is considering becoming a teacher because he wants to be a role model for future generations. “I feel that becoming a teacher would be a great way to do that,” he wrote. “I want to be a voice to the voiceless.” 

He also reflected on the impact of working with younger students during his time as a TA. “Often outside of school, I run into some of my second graders that I TA for,” he shared. He recalled a moment when a teacher told him that one of the students said the best part of his day was seeing Cason, something that made him feel he could truly make a difference simply by showing up.

His counselor, Jessica Okey, described watching younger students naturally gather around him, hug him, and celebrate his presence, calling it “absolutely priceless.”

Outside of academics and leadership, Cason enjoys creating art, listening to music, thrifting, and playing baseball. One of his favorite parts of high school has been the social experience and getting to meet people from many different backgrounds. “Getting to meet people with all kinds of personalities and backgrounds is a great thing to experience,” he said.

As advice for younger students, Cason keeps it simple and direct: “Procrastination is your worst enemy.”
