Senior Stories: Gabriella DeRoma

Gabriella DeRoma, a dedicated and enthusiastic senior at Richfield High School, is excited to head to the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire to study applied mathematics with a minor in Spanish.

Gabriella has a clear vision for her future, seeing herself graduating from college in the next 5-10 years and hoping to have the opportunity to travel all over the world, particularly Asia. “I also hope to find a job that I am truly passionate about, one that hopefully makes other people's lives easier,” she said.

Gabriella is the president of Me to We, a member of the National Honor Society, and has been part of the Spartan Crew for the last three years. These roles have allowed her to develop leadership skills and make meaningful contributions to her school community. The nonprofit organization Gabriella would most like to volunteer for is Race for the Cure. Her grandmother passed away from breast cancer many years ago, and Gabriella's family volunteered for this cause in the past. She hopes to bring that tradition back and continue supporting the fight against breast cancer.

Family is incredibly important to Gabriella. She says, “I have an amazing mom who supports me no matter what. She has been there for me through the best moments over the last eighteen years but she has also been my rock and support system during the hardest moments.”

The teacher who has made the greatest impact on Gabriella is Madame Steele. Over the past four years, Madame Steele has taught Gabriella how to advocate for herself and fight for what she believes is right. Despite initially meeting online during distance learning, Madame Steele has become a role model for Gabriella. Her dedication to her students and willingness to go above and beyond, including taking 22 students to France over spring break, have left a lasting impression on Gabriella.

Madame Steele says, “Gaby has worked extremely hard in all of her college level courses and has been a leader in her DLI courses. She has been vital in helping me think of how to approach teaching another language to multilingual students and keeping students engaged when they're acquiring another language more rapidly. She pushes herself beyond her comfort zone frequently and shows up as her best self even on difficult days.”

For incoming freshmen, Gabriella offers valuable advice: participate as much as possible. She encourages freshmen to attend football games, track meets, and soccer games, as these events have provided her with incredible memories. She also emphasizes the importance of participating in spirit weeks and joining clubs: “Your high school experience will be so much better if you participate and have fun!”

Gabriella DeRoma's journey is characterized by her passion for learning, dedication to making a difference and commitment to embracing every opportunity. Good luck in your future and we can’t wait to see you succeed!
